Love and Friendship

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”
Friedrich Nietzsche

This quote is very interesting because this could be a huge reason why so many people are unhappy in marriages and the divorce rate is so high. It seems as if our society sees divorce as not a big deal and just a daily occurrence, but why has divorce become so common I wonder? Yes divorce occurs for many reasons, but can’t it be prevented by not rushing into a relationship? Some people do get divorced for other reasons, not just because they rushed into it.
Many people rush into marriage and do not really get to know the other person, which is pretty common for celebrities. For instance, the Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries situation, everyone knows that they got married without really even knowing each other, but they still continued to get married and had their marriage broadcasted on television. I do not understand why there is such a rush for young people to get married when they have their whole life to settle down. When people are in a rush they do not see things clearly, like the idea that the person that they are going to marry is not the best person for them. Why would a person wish to marry someone, and then later realize that they love that person, but do not really want to be married to them, due to the fact that they do not know each other very well?
Personally, with love, I think that I would have to actually know a person and be friends with them before I could ever think about falling in love with them. For some people, this may be different though, maybe not everyone believes that friendship is needed for love. But who would want to marry a complete stranger who knows nothing about them and they know nothing about him/her? Many people seem to use the word love loosely, especially teens. Just because you and your boyfriend/girlfriend have been together for a few months does not mean that you guys are in love. Yes, I heard that falling in love is easy to do (I personally would not know due to the fact that I am only 16 and have never been in love), but shouldn’t it take more than just love to make the love last?

  1. I completely agree with your post, I think that love is not something that can be rushed and takes time. With the whole marriage situation, I think that you not only need love, but friendship as well, because I think your partner should be able to be considered like a best friend but more. People should take time when it comes to relationships, because like you said we still have our whole lives ahead of us.

  2. It takes a stable and sane Mind! When you think about writting about marriages . "Its Complicated" but for our young age i think your mind is set on the right track i only wish everyone understood that . Marriage is a season in liofe and it should be waited for not rushed in because in the wait you find more beauty worth loving for .

  3. This is so true. I hate how kids think they have found the love of their life just because they knew each other for a few weeks. And then they start crying when the relationship doesn’t work out. I wonder why? People have to get to know each other to the point that they can be friends and then they can start thinking about love. Those are the relationships that tend to last the most.

  4. I can relate to what you are saying there are things that people can do to strengthen there relationships and friendships is one of them. If you ever hear couples that have been together for thirty years or more it's because they say that their spouse is their best friend. Marriage is not all lovey dovey because when that stops what is left? So yes I do think that you have a good point and I appreciate this blog.

  5. The best marriages are always with best friends. It is their friendship that allows couples to patch things up and reach agreements. Those without that friendship tying them together will die like a candle's flame with a thin wick.
